Approximate Truth in Economic Modelling
نویسنده
چکیده
94<100 words) Economic intuitions concerning rational behaviour in interactive social situations are shaped by idealized models which are regarded as “approximately true”. But ideal models cannot be meaningfully deemed approximately true unless asymptotically convergent processes imply them as limit cases. We illustrate by various examples – infinitely patient customers on durable monopoly markets, homogeneity of commodities, super-games etc. – how this necessary methodological requirement is almost routinely neglected. On this basis we draw some conclusions concerning the continuity between abstract and less abstract models on the one and the world modelled by them on the other hand. *Economics RSSS, Australian National University, Canberra, **Max Planck Institute for Research into Economic Systems. Algorithms for Determining and Labelling Approximate Hierarchical Self-Similarity
We describe an algorithm for finding approximate sequence similarity at all scales of interest, being explicit about our modelling assumptions and the parameters of the algorithm. We further present an algorithm for producing section labels based on the sequence similarity, and compare these labels with some expert-provided ground truth for a particular set of recordings.
متن کاملEarly Health Economic Modelling – Optimizing Development for Medical Device Developers?; Comment on “Problems and Promises of Health Technologies: The Role of Early Health Economic Modeling”
This commentary considers the positive and negative consequences of early economic modelling and explores potential future directions. Early economic modelling offers device manufacturers an opportunity to assess the potential value of an innovation at an early stage of development. Early modelling can direct resources into potentially viable technologies and reduce inv...
متن کاملHow Useful Are Early Economic Models?; Comment on “Problems and Promises of Health Technologies: The Role of Early Health Economic Modelling”
Early economic modelling has long been recommended to aid research and development (R&D;) decisions in medical innovation, although they are less frequently published and critically appraised. A review of 30 innovations by Grutters et al provides an opportunity to evaluate how early models are used in practice. The evidence of early models can be used to inform two types...
متن کاملA Consistent and Accurate Numerical Method for Approximate Numerical Solution of Two Point Boundary Value Problems
In this article we have proposed an accurate finite difference method for approximate numerical solution of second order boundary value problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions. There are numerous numerical methods for solving these boundary value problems. Some these methods are more efficient and accurate than others with some advantages and disadvantages. The results in experiment on model...
متن کاملMeasure the Fluctuation of the Stock Index According to Approximate Entropy and Standard Deviation
Abstract. The concept of entropy has been widely extended to other fields, including information theory and economic research. The economic financial sector of any country is the supplier of financial resources and real economic activities, which are divided into two parts: the money market and the capital market. In this paper, two criteria, approximate entropy and standard deviation have been...
